Press Release: Kinston Public Services message on Hurricane Irene cleanup

August 28, 2011

This is a message from Kinston Public Services.

City of Kinston crews are working hard to restore power after the devastating winds of Hurricane Irene.  We have received assistance from our fellow public power communities and with their help we believe we will restore power to most City of Kinston customers by Friday, September 2.  You should stay away from downed power lines and assume they are energized.

We ask residents to place their storm debris curbside, but away from storm drains, gutters, water meters, and hydrants if possible.  Our environmental staff will maintain a regular pickup schedule; however, your storm debris will be collected by an independent contractor who will operate on a different collection schedule than our environmental services staff.  Our environmental services staff will pickup any remaining storm debris after the contractor has finished their operations.

You can assist us in our recovery by cleaning storm drains around your property and placing that with your storm debris for collection.  This will help guard against possible flooding if we receive heavy rains in the coming days.
