The members of the Kinston City Council approved an earlier start time for their meetings this week in an effort to help council members and city staffers get home at a decent hour.
The council typically meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month, with a 5:30 p.m. worksession on the third Monday.
Starting in the New Year, though, the council will meet at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday — the third Monday schedule remains the same.
“This way allows our staff to pretty much stay at work and then go straight to City Hall, and everyone gets home at a reasonable time,” Mayor B.J. Murphy said.
Murphy said the workday ends at 5 p.m. for city staffers and department heads. He also noted council members are working — the majority of members have jobs with hours in the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. range.
The changes will be effective next month, starting with the council’s Jan. 7 meeting.
“It’s effective the first meeting of the year,” Murphy said.
