RALEIGH — If approved by the members of the N.C. House and Senate, voters in Kinston will have the opportunity this November to determine whether or not to give their mayor veto power.
House Bill 310, which is scheduled for a vote by the full House Monday, puts to the voters the question of amending the Kinston city charter to allow the mayor to veto any action passed by the City Council, except for matters approved by voters.
Rep. Stephen LaRoque, R-Lenoir, is the bill’s sponsor; he presented HB 310 to members of the House Committee on Government on Thursday. The committee members voted 20-9 to give it a favorable recommendation and send it to the House floor.
“I’ve gotten multiple emails from folks wanting this to be on the ballot and to pass,” LaRoque told the committee. “And the mayor wants it and lots of other folks in Kinston want it.”
