Janet S. Carter/The Free Press Mayor B.J. Murphy, center, speaks with Annette Boyd, assistant chief for law enforcement, at the town hall forum on gangs Tuesday at The Gate.
With three times the expected attendance, Kinston Mayor B.J. Murphy considered his first town hall meeting on combating gangs a sign that the city should host others.
“It’s probably the most integrated room I’ve seen in a long time,” Murphy said after the Tuesday evening meeting, which drew black and white pastors, civic leaders, elected officials, educators and law enforcement officers.
“The purpose was to build relationships, and if you notice, we finished 20 minutes ago and people are still talking,” the mayor said.
